One of the fastest growing cities in Indonesia’s East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo, Tanah Grogot is proud of its modern infrastructure and is attracting increasing amounts of foreign investment.

Tanah Grogot is capital of the Paser Regency whose population in the 2010 census had grown 30 percent from 2005 to reach over 230,000.

Located in the southernmost corner of Borneo, Tanah Grogot is 10 kilometres from the spectacular Kandilo river and over a 100 kilometres from the nearest airport of Sepinggan.

Boasting both modern amenities and increasing economic opportunities, Tanah Grogot is a popular place to live and work.

Providing public utilities for this growing city and its residents is the responsibility of the forward-thinking municipal water authority, PDAM Tirta Kandilo.

The Situation

Tanah Grogot’s water authority – PDAM Tirta Kandilo – has supplied the city with clean and healthy water from a treatment plant originally built in 1981. In line with the modernisation of the city, PDAM Tirta Kandilo’s long-term aim was to provide even more residents with access to clean water supplies.

However, the combination of a rapidly growing population and a city that was expanding its geographical borders was already stretching the capacity of the old plant, despite a renovation programme in 2003. Without increased capacity, services were limited and the authority’s hopes of providing more people across a wider area with clean water at a cost-effective price could not be realised.

The Grundfos Solution

To deliver more clean water to more people in the growing city of Tanah Grogot, Pdam Tirta Kandilo needed to increase the capabilities of its treatment plant in an economically viable and sustainable way. The solution was to adopt better technology from Grundfos.

In 2004, Grundfos Indonesia joined forces with contractor Bestindo Putra Mandiri to build a new water plant that takes water from the 191 kilometer-long Kandilo river. At the plant, river water is purified before being pumped into homes in Tanah Grogot.

At the heart of the plant is an environmentally friendly Grundfos pumping solution that creates clean water in a sustainable way using Accurate DMM-AR Dosing pump and Hydro 2000 that is both fully automatic and wireless. Water is pumped from the river into a piping system with a three-phase processing and treatment solution. In Phase 1, a DMM-AR Dosing pump applies a chemical injection for coagulation and flocculation. In Phase 2, the water is pumped through a sedimentation process for filtering before going into a reservoir. In Phase 3, a Grundfos Hydro 2000 pumps water through the water mains and to the people of Grogot.

The Outcome

Using the Grundfos pump solution, Tanah Grogot’s new water treatment plant can process 720 m3 per hour of raw water providing over 100,000 inhabitants with clean safe water on tap. And there’s plenty of room for expansion to match the needs of this growing city. The new plant is capable of doubling its current output.

The treatment plant is also a technology breakthrough as it is the first municipal plant in Indonesia that is fully automatic and can be operated by the PLC, SCADA System and Wireless Control System. As a result the system, which cost US$190,000, minimises human error and saves time and money, reducing costs by between 10 to 15%. Automatic systems create pure water which use fewer chemicals such as aluminium sulphate. This reduces costs and is better for the environment.

The new Tanah Grogot water plant is also a bottling facility that will provide clean and affordable water for the convenience of residents in the province. When it goes into production in 2012, the planned capacity is 200 gallons per hour. With environmental and sustainability a priority, the plant also has a bottle cleaning system so water bottles can be recycled and reused.

Technical director of PDAM Tirta Kandilo, Achmad Anshari, said: “Grundfos provides a wide range of water supply applications. It has contributed and given full support to us to achieve our goals of providing clean water to our many communities."
